Summer Fun: Our four favourite Denglish phrases.

Our team works in two languages. Occupational hazards apply. Here are our four favourite Denglish phrases.

"Enjoy life in full trains." — Victoria's favourite. She advises families from Berlin, guides them through visa applications and stays calm when others would have lost their nerve long ago. Optimism isn't something she practises, it's her default setting.

"Again what learned." — Theresa's favourite. Her fridge is covered in New Yorker cartoons. Her kitchen wall lined with signs reading things like "I can only please one person a day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look good either." Anyone who has spent time with Theresa, at the dinner table, in the office or on school visits, knows: laughter is guaranteed.

"I only understand train station." — Isobel's favourite. Raised in Kent, a German linguistics graduate from Warwick, she now guides families through the admissions process and runs mock admissions interviews with our students. That she of all people only understands train station seems rather unlikely.

"I make myself me-nothing you-nothing out of the dust." — Virginia's favourite. Virginia grew up with three sisters, Theresa among them, all at an English-speaking school from year one. Switching languages mid-sentence was a family sport. Trading Denglisch phrases was too. This one still makes the sisters laugh.
